We stayed at cottabetta bungalow (verandah room) for 4 nights - one of the many bungalows Tata Coffee offers through their website plantation trails for stay in Coorg. We chose to stay in cottabetta bungalow, because it was at a decent altitude and was considered to be one of the best bungalows by Tata Coffee. To begin with, on the day of our arrival we were receiving calls from Mr. Kulkarni (who was very kind in offering help with directions and which routes to avoid). We were driving from Bangalore and it took considerable time for us to reach there (5-6 hours) - please keep that in mind if travelling with kids. The rooms were "huge" by Mumbai standards. My daughter loved to play around the room, including common areas like drawing room, sit-out area and the lawn. The staff was courteous and decent reading material was floating freely in the bungalow. Food was home cooked type. While the food was delicious, the menu is very simple and limited. Although the chef, Madhu, was kind enough to go out of his way and cook something you want (outside the menu). New year eve was made special by a bonfire and food alongside. The bungalow had amazing sunrise view and with the bungalow comes complimentary tata coffee plantation and tata tea estate ride - worth an experience. Just a few things one should consider before making up their mind: (a) you must have your own vehicle, if planning to explore the area (else, you need to call for a taxi - which is not readily available at all times and is relatively expensive); (b) while they have a great golf course, you cannot walk outside the bungalow limits, due to wild elephants in the area; (c) it is a peaceful location in the middle of coffee plantation, and therefore may appear a bit boring for young crowd - be mindful of that; and (d) the mobile signals are poor (could be blessing in disguise)!. Overall a great place to stay. We look forward to exploring many more bungalows at Tata Coffee.

The winding road through the coffee estate brought us to the bungalow once known as the 'White House of Coorg!'. The Cottabetta bungalow stands proud on top of the estate with expansive views of the forest and the hills as far as the eye can see. Mr Kulkarni who manages the property and the staff greet you with wide smiles and a strange familiarity which makes you feel that you might be at home! (how I wish my home was the bungalow itself :)). The bungalow is itself 130 years old as Mr Kulkarni goes on about its history and its significance during the British planters' days. The rooms are very cosy with modern restrooms. The property has 5 rooms, 2 of which can easily accommodate 4 persons. The furniture is exquisite probably dating back to the olden days and is beautifully maintained. A high-ceiling sitting room leads into a dining room and a back courtyard to sit and while your time away! The staff is very courteous, ever accommodating and always smiling. The food was very homely and heart-warming, no over-the-top spice or run-of-the mill buffet food here but a few lovingly made dishes topped off by the local "bella-coffee" or coffee with jaggery than sugar. There are several activities built into the stay but we enjoyed the coffee-estate tour where the driver-cum-guide described the different varieties of coffee grown and gave us an insight into the size of the Tata-Coffee conglomerate. I traveled for business with 11 of my colleagues and the reason it was extra special was that we were the only 12 people in the entire bungalow, and it felt just like... you guessed it, home. Cell-phone connectivity is good for voice calls and 2G data. In house wi-fi is provided but is slow, but then if you are here I strongly suggest you switch off your electronic devices and take-off into the hills!
